There are lots of reasons to do this, with one of the primary reasons being our shared responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. The great thing is that whilst you are reducing your emissions you are also reducing the burden of ever-increasing energy bills which are impacting the financial health and operating costs for so
many.

So, what’s the answer?

The government is in the process of rolling out its Smart Meter program which is driven principally by the objective of cutting carbon. This is a noble and welcome aspiration, but is it fit for all types of energy and water users? As our guide goes on to say, the government’s Smart Meter program is targeted primarily at the 36 million domestic gas and electricity meters in the UK. However, they are not necessarily suited to SME and large businesses.

So how does all this help me reduce my consumption?

There are lots of ways, and it starts with what we call a ‘Desktop Energy Audit’. This is designed to identify what you have done so far, what your processes are, and what you and your staff’s attitudes are to saving energy. Once the baseline is established, a more detailed analysis of energy usage throughout your buildings is carried out. This covers such things as building efficiency, lighting, heating and other equipment. We also seek to identify opportunities for renewables, battery technology and electric vehicle charging. These and other technological solutions can then be evaluated.

When finished, you will have a one to one with an energy manager. This is focused on agreeing objectives and strategies for the future. Inherent in this will be the use of various types of reports. Some will be focussed on water, others on gas and electricity. It depends on where the most effect can be achieved in the early periods, we call this the ’low hanging fruit’ and it can achieve rapid results.

Subsequent steps involve more longterm strategies such as working with staff and installing energy efficient equipment such as LED lighting or high-efficiency boilers.
